‘PINwise’ is an initiative of the Australian Payments Card Industry whereby a PIN instead of a signature must be used for all credit and debit transactions by 1 August 2014.
Using your PIN for credit and debit card purchases at point of sale is safer and faster than signing. There is only a one in ten thousand chance of someone guessing your PIN.
You will be required to use your PIN when you make a purchase in person or the quick and convenient payWave contactless option (for purchases over $100).
All Members should now have a PIN on their Visa Debit/Credit card. Please call our Assistance Centre on 131 728 If you do not know your PIN.
Why do I have to start using a PIN?

Why did I receive a PIN?
PINs were sent to all Members who had active use on their cards however have not used a PIN with their cards in the last 3 months.
When do I need to start using my PIN?
Officially you will no longer be able to use a signature from 1 August 2014, but we recommend using your PIN straight away as it is a more secure way to transact.
Will all transactions need a PIN?
The following transactions won’t require a PIN:
- Transactions under $100 using Visa payWave or MasterCard® PayPass™
- International transactions.
- Transactions conducted by cardholders with cards issued by banks outside Australia.
- Australian cards overseas may or may not require PIN depending upon PIN related guidance in the country, so it’s advisable to have PINs before going overseas.
- Transactions made via mail, phone or online.
If I already knew my PIN and I received a new one, which one do I use?
The new PIN will make your old PIN redundant. There may be a time between when the new PINs are in the mail that the old PIN cannot be used.
Can I change my PIN?
Yes you can change your PIN at one of our Service Centres or if you know your existing PIN you can change it at any RediATM.
I didn’t receive a PIN, what do I do?
If you are near a Service Centre you can come in and get a PIN added to your card.
Alternatively we will need to reissue you with a new card, which will take 5-7 days to receive.
If I am at the checkout and I don’t know my PIN, what can I do?
You can put the transactions through of under $100 a time using PayWave (maximum of $500 or 10 transaction a day, whichever is reached first). Alternatively you will need to find another way to pay i.e. cash, another card (that you know the PIN), cheque.
What happens if I forget my PIN when trying to pay?
If you type the wrong PIN three times into the point-of-sale terminal, your card will become locked and you will be unable to complete a point-of-sale transaction. Your card will remain locked and unusable until after midnight.
If you have forgotten your PIN, or if you don’t know if you have a PIN, you should contact us directly on 131 728 in business hours.
What if I have ‘locked’ use of my card because I have entered the credit card PIN incorrectly a number of times? Would I still be able to use my signature as another form of proof?
No your card will be locked for all transactions, to prevent fraud, in this case, please contact us on 131 728 to get your card unlocked.
Can you mail me another PIN?
Unfortunately we do not have the facilities to send PINs individually, we have to reissue cards. It is important that you use and memorise the PIN we sent you in June to prevent this.
Will the PIN I use for making purchases be the same as the PIN used for cash withdrawals at the ATM?
Yes. Each new card will have one PIN that can be used for cash withdrawals at ATMs, and purchases at point-of-sale.
If I return goods for a refund, will I need to enter my PIN to receive the money back?
Merchant processes for dealing with refunds may vary. In some cases, you may be asked to enter your PIN. The merchant will provide you with further information on processing the refund and what is required from you.
What if I’m not prompted to enter a PIN?
Where the point-of-sale terminal at the merchant does not prompt you to enter a PIN, you will be asked to follow the current card payment process, normally using your signature to confirm the transaction. Note that contactless transactions “PayWave” under $100, some low value transactions under $35 and most transactions from unattended terminals e.g. vending machines and parking meters will not require a PIN (or a signature).
Will PINs be used to make card transactions through the Internet or over the telephone?
No, your PIN is only applicable when you are physically present at the point-of-sale during the purchase or cash-out transaction. You should never share your PIN with anyone if purchasing goods online or via the telephone.
Do credit cards still need to be signed on the reverse?
Yes, the signature will continue to be used for verification in certain situations, such as travelling abroad to a country where PIN is not used or where a merchant has not upgraded to a PIN enabled terminal.
Can I still use the contactless option?
Yes you can still ‘tap’ your Visa payWave enabled credit or debit card on a contactless enabled terminal or touchpad to initiate the payment side of the transaction. When contactless is used, for any transaction under the value of $100 there is no need for you to PIN or sign. For transactions of $100 or greater you will be asked for a PIN.
How can I add a gratuity in a restaurant?
Most new pay-at-table terminals at restaurants should display the amount that you are paying and ask if you wish to add a gratuity (often providing the option of adding a percentage or a dollar figure that you can choose).
How does PIN affect those who are blind or partially sighted?
The vast majority of PIN pads on point-of-sale terminals have a tactile feature that includes a raised dot on the middle ‘5’ button. This layout will be familiar to most people with vision impairments, and should therefore be easier to use. Also, the primary ‘function’ keys are colour coded for ease of visibility. Usually, the ‘cancel’ button is red, the ‘clear/cancel’ button is yellow, and the ‘Enter/OK’ button is green.
